Texas' time as an independent republic between 1836 and 1845 is an exciting period of Texas history. During this nine-year span, Texas endured war and economic change as it grew into a sovereign nation with its own constitution, currency and diplomatic relationships. Texas declared itself a Republic following the Texas Revolution against Mexico, ending with the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. Texas later declared independence from Mexico and that declaration was recognized by many nations, establishing Texas as a legitimate entity.
